A CSIC delegation visits the Shanghai Centre of Excellence for Molecular Plant Sciences (CEMPS)

This visit reinforces the alliance between Spain and China within the framework of the CEPEI collaboration program, in which the CBGP participates.

Research in plant molecular sciences is key to addressing global challenges such as food security and sustainable agriculture. In this context, and within the framework of the CEPEI scientific collaboration program, which connects the Centre of Excellence for Molecular Plant Sciences (CEMPS) and the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with the CBGP (UPM/CSIC), a high-level delegation from the CSIC, headed by its president, Eloísa del Pino, visited CEMPS in Shanghai.

CEMPS is one of the leading international centres for research in plant molecular biology, specializing in the study of the genetic and cellular mechanisms that regulate plant growth, development, and response to their environment.

The Centre of Excellence for Plant–Environment Interactions (CEPEI) program, established in 2019, brings together the CBGP, the IGDB, and the PSC (integrated within CEMPS), and is currently developing six joint projects aimed at generating cutting-edge knowledge and tools that contribute to the development of more sustainable agriculture.

The Spanish delegation included Dr. Javier Moreno, Vice President for International Affairs at the CSIC; Dr. Isabel Martínez, Director of the Office of the President; and Luis Antonio Calvo Castaño, Consul General of Spain in Shanghai.

They were received by Prof. Bin Han, Director of CEMPS and Academician at the CAS; Prof. Yu Zhang, Deputy Director of the Centre; and CEMPS Principal Investigators Prof. Alberto Macho, Prof. Jeremy Murray, Prof. Chanhong Kim, Prof. Xiufang Xin, and Prof. Dapeng Li.

The visit strengthens an ongoing scientific collaboration within the framework of CEPEI, aimed at promoting joint projects, knowledge exchange, and the creation of scientific networks between China and Spain in the field of plant molecular sciences.

In this context, the CBGP plays an active role in fostering this international cooperation, contributing to the development of strategic initiatives in an area crucial to the future of sustainable agriculture.
